Rotator Cuff Tears
The rotator cuff is a group of tendons that helps lift and rotate your arm.
Common Symptoms
Pain with lifting, night pain or weakness, sometimes after a fall.
How It Is Evaluated
Strength and motion testing, with ultrasound or MRI when needed, help identify tendon injury.
Nonsurgical Management
Physical therapy, activity changes and selected medications or injections can reduce symptoms. These treatments do not necessarily heal a torn tendon.
When Surgery May Help
Repair may help with an acute traumatic tear, significant weakness or symptoms that persist despite appropriate nonsurgical care.
Recovery & Return to Activity
Recovery depends on the injury, treatment and your activity goals. Rehabilitation progresses from motion and strength to functional tasks. Return to sport should be based on healing, function and your care team's assessment, rather than a date alone.
