Ankle Sprains
Rolling the ankle can stretch or tear the ligaments that support it.
Common Symptoms
Pain, swelling, bruising and difficulty bearing weight.
How It Is Evaluated
Examination guides the need for X-rays and checks for fractures or other injuries.
Nonsurgical Management
Early protection and swelling control are followed by appropriate movement, progressive loading, strength and balance exercises. A brace may help.
When Surgery May Help
Most sprains heal without surgery. Persistent instability or associated injuries may need further imaging and, occasionally, surgery.
Recovery & Return to Activity
Recovery depends on the injury, treatment and your activity goals. Rehabilitation progresses from motion and strength to functional tasks. Return to sport should be based on healing, function and your care team's assessment, rather than a date alone.
